Stirrup Tips & Tricks

Stirrups are an important part of helping the rider stay balanced while they ride! To keep everyone as safe as possible, it’s very important to make sure they get put on the saddle correctly.

Take a look below for some easy tips & tricks to tell them apart, put them on the saddle, & keep them organized on the shelf until we finish putting together their new home!

putting them together…

Place them in front of you with the BLACK sides facing each other. Make sure you can see an "L" & "R" next to each other on the black sections.

STEP 1:

Place the stirrups in front of you with the BLACK sides facing each other.

Make sure you can see an “L” & and an “R” next to each other on the black sections.

STEP 2:

Take your stirrup leathers (with the buckle facing towards you), make sure they’re flat, then feed the other end through the hole away from you.

STEP 3:

Buckle it into a circle, then shove the leather under the metal piece under the small flap towards the front of the saddle. Make sure the buckle is facing OUT and in FRONT of the metal piece.

If the stirrups are on correctly, the BLACK is to the BACK & the COLOR is to the HEAD!

Telling Them Apart…

Make sure you have a matching pair!

Check the black sides of the stirrup & make sure one stirrup says “L” & the other one says “R”! That’s a matching pair!

If you have 2 “L”s or 2 “R”s, you won’t be able to put them on correctly.

Does the tacking list say “Junior” or “Adult”?

Check the bottom of the stirrup under where the foot sits. If it says “Junior”, it’s a Junior pair (for small feet)!

If it doesn’t say anything, it’s an Adult pair.

Keeping Them Organized…

Help us keep everything neat & tidy!

When you put safety stirrups back in the tack room, make sure to lean them against the wall in a pair so they stay together. We don't want to send anyone out in two left or two right stirrups!

We also want to make sure the "Junior" stirrups & "Adult" stirrups stay together. Check the bottom of the stirrup & make sure to put them on the correct side of the shelf.

Thank you so much for taking a look at this page! It’s very important that the stirrups are put on correctly, as they can be dangerous when they’re used incorrectly, and switching them out or fixing them last minute can take time away from the lesson. When in doubt, ask a staff member, instructor, or another volunteer to check your work!

Happy tacking, and thank you for volunteering!
