Our Instructors and Horses Can Help!
Whether you are currently living with or are a survivor of cancer, we know you may crave ways to remove yourself temporarily from the demands of treatment schedules, medical professionals, and even the anxious concern of your friends and family members.
Time spent bonding with horses can be a wonderful way to aid in your recovery by helping you to relax and feel less stressed. In addition, our instructors will help to strengthen and replenish your body and focus your mind.
The goal of Horses for Healing is to bring you joy and help you be more oriented toward a life of well being as we help to gently strengthen your body. We hope that by helping you to rebuild your physical, emotional, and mental well-being, you may have the potential to better recover your health and remain healthy.
The Horses for Healing program recognizes your unique situation and provides a healthy outlet for both children and adults, enabling you to move away from the medical context and into a naturally engaging environment. Our program is based on a team model that forms a support network outside of the illness experience.
You will experience all aspects of horse care, grooming, leading, riding, and carriage driving as you earn the respect of and build a relationship with our kind and gentle horses and ponies.
Adaptive horseback riding provides beneficial physical activity and emotional benefits through learning new skills, interacting with horses, peers and volunteers, all while being immersed in nature.
Riding can also help to develop balance and coordination. The movements required to cue a horse requires body awareness. Riding does not depend on strength alone, but strong, flexible muscles that aid in stability and coordination to communicate with the horse.
What results might you experience?
For many participants the enjoyment derived from this experience will encourage them to attempt new tasks and perhaps discover hidden proficiencies, while other participants may leave this program with a heightened sense of self-awareness and capability.
We hope this experience will create an inward challenge allowing you to perceive yourself more positively and accurately.
What happens when you aren't feeling well?
No matter how you are feeling on any given day due to your medical treatments, we encourage you to attend each and every session as activities can be matched to your capabilities.
Who will lead you through this experience?
You will be in the capable hands of our Mane Stream instructors, who are all PATH International Certified, trained in First Aid and CPR, and have strong horsemanship
background. Another important part of the Mane Stream team is our specially trained volunteers who will ensure you feel safe and at ease.
