Horse Bathing FAQ!
The summer is h
When the temperatures rise, horses cool themselves off by sweating, especially during work! Once they’re finished with their session, it’s really important they’re cooled off before being put away in their stall. To decide the best way to care for your horse, follow the steps below!
Frist, Take everything off and Check over your Horse!
Once you’re back in the barn, take a look under the saddle. Are they dry? Sweaty? VERY sweaty? Hot to the touch?
Face the Front Clips In, Towards the Horse
When attaching the front of the blanket that uses clips, make sure to face the section of the clip that opens in towards the horse.
If it faces out, there’s a chance the horse may accidentally clip themselves onto something like a fence. This could spook them and potentially cause a serious issue.
Some blankets use buckles or t-locks to close instead of clips. For both of these closures, all you need to do is fasten them snugly across the chest without it being so tight that it rubs. You should be able to comfortably slide your hand between the horse and the blanket.
T-locks will often have velcro to hold the sides together. If this is the case, make sure to close the velcro securely, then attach the t-locks on top.
Attach the Belly Straps Diagonally
To attach the belly straps securely, make sure to attach them to the clip diagonally across instead of the one directly across.
If the blanket has three straps, cross the two outside straps diagonally across, and the last, middle strap directly across (see last photo).
Whether there are two straps or three, you want to see the two outside straps cross over and create an X in the middle of the belly.
Hook the Leg Straps around Each Leg and Loop Them through each other
Some blankets use leg straps. These should be hooked around each leg, but linked through each other in the middle.
To do this, bring the first strap around the leg and hook it to the same side you started on. Then, take the second strap and do the same on the other side, making sure to loop it through the first strap in the middle. You should be left with two loops, pulling against each other in the middle.
Always Leave the Tail Strap Attached

Some blankets use tail straps instead. When putting a blanket on with a tail strap, just pull the tail over the top of it once it’s sitting correctly.
When taking a blanket off, make sure not to unclip the tail strap. Just leave it attached and pull the tail underneath the strap before taking the blanket off.
Thank you so much for taking a look at this page! It’s really important that a blanket is put on correctly to avoid any horses getting spooked or hurt. When in doubt, definitely ask a staff member to check your work!
Happy blanketing and thank you for volunteering!
